With more women taking their fashion cues from social media sites rather than glossy magazines, the big makeup trend is less obvious than in the days when Revlon’s glamorous red pout held sway. While it may not be a match for clean beauty enthusiasts, it’s a win in my book.This week Revlon filed for bankruptcy protection in the US, a legal process that enables the ailing company to continue trading while it figures out how to repay its substantial debts. Color aside, I fully understand the hype behind Revlon’s Super Lustrous line-it’s incredibly affordable yet offers the same creamy, long-lasting coverage as more expensive brands. Real talk: I’m afraid of this shade selling out and am about to stock up on it at CVS. Like Léa, it also doesn’t contain questionable preservatives BHA or BHT. MAC Cosmetics Matte Lipstick in Chili ($19): Described as a “warm brick red,” this is another on-point shade match for Toast of New York at a slightly lower price point than NARS. Described as a “neutral spiced rose,” this color is a spot-on Toast of New York dupe, but the formulation doesn’t contain BHT or BHA, which is a plus for some. NARS Audacious Lipstick in Léa ($34): If it’s the color you’re after, NARS Audacious line in shade Léa is a great shade match. The price is unparalleled for the quality-the formula and shade is just as creamy, moisturizing, long-lasting, and beautiful as the more expensive brands. (I personally wouldn’t write this lipstick off because of it.)Īt just $8.49, Revlon’s Super Lustrous Lipstick is a cult-favorite product for a reason. Of course, whether or not BHT is a deal-breaker for you is a matter of personal preference. Super Lustrous shades do contain butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), which is a common preservative linked to skin irritation and hormone disruption that earned a spot on our list of questionable ingredients. The shades are particularly rich, vibrant, and lightweight, thanks to the brand's use of microfine pigments. Revlon’s Super Lustrous line is famously formulated with moisturizing vitamin E and avocado oil for a creamy feel.
